WHO ARE WE?
We are civil servants of the Public Workers’ Front, organised within the KESK (Confederation of Public Employees’ Unions).
WHY ARE WE WALKING TO ANKARA?
We are walking to reclaim our job security, which the AKP government is trying to take from us by force, and to draw attention to the pressure exercised upon public sector employees.
You may know, that the AKP government, as with every group within the population, has also robbed many civil servants of their rights.
1-WE ARE BECOMING POORER WITH EVERY PASSING DAY!
Nowadays, the poverty line has been announced at 4560 lira monthly. We, public sector workers, earn a salary well below the poverty line.
2- WE ARE UNDER PRESSURE!
Having been in power for 14 years already, the AKP has finished setting up loyal political cadres in public office. This is the reason why we are exposed to psychological pressure at our work places.
On February 17, 2016, the AKP released Prime Minister’s Office’s circular No. 2016/4 intended for the public sector workers, which it wants to make use of by associating with terrorism all opposition groups’ attempts to achieve democratic rights.
3-THERE IS AN ATTACK ON OUR JOB SECURITY!
This year, a performance system was introduced to teachers, which is an important step taken by the AKP toward the creation of precarious working conditions.
The recruitment of new teachers on a contractual basis will normalise precarious working conditions.
The AKP government’s thoughts have been repeated explicitly over and over again:
“We will eliminate the difference between private and public sector workers; the civil servants will not be allowed to make away with the rights of our labouring brothers and sisters; ATM machine-like civil servants earn money while sleeping and take three months vacation.”
With these words, the AKP government is trying to make the public labourers scapegoat for having impoverished the people.
They announced their target date:
“We will amend article No. 657 of the Civil Servants Act before 2017”
Thus, civil servants in opposition can be fired for saying that they are being treated unfairly, and those that will not be fired will be forced to obey!
A State of Emergency has been announced in the country due to the clash of interests between the AKP and the Gülen Movement. The AKP has now turned the State of Emergency into an opportunity for itself and 84 000 civil servants have been layed off, 451 of them being KESK members. Today, the lay offs and the sackings continue.
THE ACTIONS/PROJECTS WE HAVE DONE TO RECLAIM OUR JOB SECURITY:
On January 19, 2013, we walked to the Grand National Assembly of Turkey and paid the price one month later on February 19:
As a result of raids directed against civil servants in 28 provinces, 184 of our persons were detained, 72 of us were put under arrest. Most of our trials are still continuing to this day.
In many provinces we have set up petition stands and are distributing leaflets.
In many provinces we have made press releases and hung posters.
We have conducted panels at our work places and in our unions.
In two provinces, we went on 24 hour hunger strikes.
On March 25-27 2016, we walked from İstanbul to Ankara, while making press releases and distributing leaflets. On the last day of the march, in Ankara, we were taken into custody and were tortured.
And this time, between the 10-17 of September, we are walking to Ankara. Dear press workers, we urge you to support this action of ours.
